Description
The Microchip MCP23S17-E/SO is a 16-bit input/output (I/O) expander that can be connected to a microcontroller via a serial peripheral interface (SPI) interface. It provides an easy way to expand the number of I/O pins available on a microcontroller without having to add additional pins to the microcontroller directly.
The device comprises of two 8-bit I/O ports, which can be configured to be either inputs or outputs. Each port has an associated interrupt-on-change feature to trigger an interrupt when a pin changes state. The MCP23S17-E/SO also has a hardware address pin that allows up to eight devices to be connected to a single SPI bus. It operates with a supply voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V and can withstand electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection up to 4kV.
